Proposed Programme

PMAPS is the leading forum for engineers and scientists worldwide to share and discuss their experience, ideas, and research on probabilistic methods applied to power systems. The theme of PMAPS 2024 is “Uncertainties in power systems: current context, challenges, and future trends”.

The programme includes industry keynote sessions, panel sessions, parallel paper sessions. In addition, there will be tutorials on the first day of the conference.

The confirmed tutorials are as follows:

  • Infrastructure Asset Management with Power System Applications and Tools

  • Reliability Evaluation of Active Distribution Systems

  • Reliability in Power Electronics-dominated Power System

  • Managing Uncertainty in Load Forecasting: An Australia – New Zealand Case Study

The keynote sessions will bring together invited speakers from government agencies, industries and research centres. The keynote sessions will give general views of policies, applications, and research trends in modern grid technologies. The confirmed keynote sessions will be as follows:

  • Industry trends on North American Power system - how uncertain factors, including intermittent renewables, EV charging, climate change, cybersecurity, and AI technology, will shape our energy infrastructure and decision-making.

  • The power system in 2030 – emerging trends and challenges; overview of the challenges and opportunities within the power system today and some emerging trends that we are seeing within industry.

The panel sessions will present experts from industries, research centres, and universities to share their experience and expertise in working with probabilistic method applications in power system. The proposed panel session topics include:

  • Current and Future Industry Trends and Needs

  • Research Trends and Vision in Future Grid Technology

  • Asset Management and Expansion Planning

The technical sessions will run as parallel sessions on day-2 and day-3. The proposed topics of the sessions includes:

  • Reliability for system planning, operation, control and protection

  • Reliability and resiliency assessment of smart grid and microgrids

  • Risk management and decision making

  • Cascading failures in electric power systems

  • Outage data, events and analysis

  • Uncertainties in power system state estimation

  • Uncertainties and correlations in renewable energy systems

  • Uncertainties and correlations in load forecasting and demand side management

  • Probabilistic methods and tools in educational and other applications

  • Probabilistic assessment in power market

  • Stochastic optimization and simulation

  • Big data applications in power systems

  • Artificial intelligent applications in power systems

  • Cyber-physical risk in power systems

  • Centralized, decentralized, and distributed controls of power systems

Student award and activity programme

As a tradition in PMAPS, three best student papers will be awarded the “PMAPS Roy Billinton Student Paper Award”. The best papers will be selected from technical sessions.

Throughout the conference, students will find a plethora of activities tailored to enrich their experience and advance their careers. On the first day, students will have the exclusive opportunity to participate in two tutorial sessions led by industry experts, providing invaluable insights into key topics in the power sector.

Day two will feature presentations from industry professionals, offering students the chance to expand their professional network and gain firsthand knowledge from seasoned practitioners. Additionally, students are invited to a special student-industry lunch, fostering meaningful interactions with experts and leaders from various industries.

On the third and final day, students can further enhance their network and engage with industry professionals during a dedicated panel session. Furthermore, the committee will facilitate opportunities for participating industries to showcase job openings and connect with prospective candidates, providing students with valuable avenues for career advancement.

Publication of the conference papers

All presented papers will be published in IEEE Xplore. The authors of a number of selected high-quality presented papers will be invited to submit revised and extended versions of their originally accepted conference papers to a special issue in Electric Power Systems Research (EPSR) – Elsevier journal and Sustainable Energy, Grids and Networks (SEGAN) - Elsevier journal.
